Quebec’s police watchdog is investigating another fatal shooting in Nunavik in sub-Artic Quebec. According to the Bureau des enquêtes indépendantes, or BEI, officers with the Nunavik Police Service attempted to arrest a person in Kangiqsualujjuaq, an Inuit village on the eastern shore of Ungava Bay on Tuesday night. The BEI said in a statement that police “reportedly located a wanted person inside a tent” at approximately 10:30 p.m. “The person reportedly came out of the tent armed with a bladed weapon and headed towards the police,” the statement said. The statement from the BEI also said police attempted to use an “electric shock weapon (ESW) to restrain the person. “A police officer allegedly fired at the person, who was then injured by police gunfire.” The person was taken to the health centre where they died, the BEI said. The victim was not named. According to the BEI, five investigators have been assigned to the investigation. In November 2024, another police shooting took the life of Joshua Papigatuk in Salluit. The BEI hasn’t released a report into that shooting yet. Continue Reading
