(David Bell/CBC)A 29-year-old man is facing multiple criminal charges related to vehicle theft and dangerous driving after an incident in western Saskatchewan this week — and police are also warning the public not to take matters into their own hands if they see a crime in progress.RCMP in Unity were called around 9 a.m. on Wednesday with a report of suspicious activity in Salvador, a hamlet about 200 kilometres west of Saskatoon.A man was seen getting into a black truck and leaving Salvador, heading southbound on Highway 31, RCMP said in a Friday news release.Shortly after, they got a report of a stolen truck matching the same description.Officers from the Unity RCMP detachment and Luseland Police Service responded, and the black truck was spotted near Salvador. When police attempted a traffic stop, the driver fled. At that point, RCMP learned civilian vehicles were following the stolen truck, and “they were told not to intervene,” the release said. That also prompted RCMP to warn that anyone who is aware of a crime being committed should contact police.”Do not take matters into your own hands,” the RCMP news release said.Police say the black truck was later found abandoned in a rural area near Denzil, just northwest of Salvador, but the driver wasn’t found.Later that day, RCMP got a report of a stolen grey truck near Denzil. They found the truck in Unity, about 40 kilometres northeast of Denzil, but again found no one in the vehicle.Their investigation identified a suspect, and the 29-year-old man was arrested in Unity. He has been charged with possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000, possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, flight from a peace officer, two counts of motor vehicle theft, and failure to comply with an undertaking. He’s scheduled to appear in North Battleford provincial court on Monday.
