(CBC)A Chester Basin, N.S., man has been charged in an alleged sexual assault that police say occurred almost 22 years ago.In a news release Wednesday, RCMP said they have charged Corey Fitzgerald White, 54, with sexual assault, sexual exploitation and sexual interference. The alleged victim was a child at the time and was assaulted by a man known to them, the release said.RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Dominic Laflamme said Wednesday that the investigation started five years ago but had to be shelved when the complainant didn’t want to proceed.”This is a file from 2020 where a victim came forward and reported some allegation of sexual offences to the RCMP. But at the time, the victim was not ready to go forward, I guess, with that,” Laflamme said. The release said investigators believe there may be additional victims in Newfoundland, Ontario, Alberta and British Columbia. Laflamme said police recognize how daunting it can be for people to come forward.”They’re going to be reliving everything when they’re talking to us, providing a statement,” Laflamme said. “So it’s something that’s very difficult and we just hope that this is going to tell them: come forward and we will help you, we will support you throughout the investigation.”White has been released on conditions and will appear in Bridgewater provincial court on Nov. 19.MORE TOP STORIES
