(Ken Linton/CBC)A targeted shooting into a car on a dirt section of road in western P.E.I. Friday night killed a 35-year-old man and involved a perpetrator who fled the scene and has not yet been arrested, RCMP said at a briefing Monday afternoon.Cpl. Gavin Moore, the media relations officer for the P.E.I. RCMP, told reporters that police believe another vehicle was present on the Hackmatack Road when shots were reported at around 8 p.m. AT on Friday in the Urbainville area, near Wellington. “These incidents are uncommon in our province, and they are certainly unsettling. We take this very seriously and extensive police resources have been deployed to this investigation,” Moore said. “Police do have many leads to investigate, but do not have an arrest at this time.”Moore did not identify the victim of the shooting, which caused a 2008 Toyota Corolla to roll over and strike a utility pole. The male driver was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger, a 50-year-old Summerside woman, was taken to Prince County Hospital in Summerside with serious injuries. Police asking public for tips plus any car video footage after targeted shooting in Western P.E.I.There are still few details available on a weekend shooting that left a man dead and a woman injured in a crashed 2008 Corolla, and set many Islanders on edge. Today, RCMP said they are seeking an unnamed perpetrator, and confirmed the victim was a 35-year-old man who was injured by gunshots. CBC’s Tony Davis has more.Moore did not give an update on her condition, saying the families of both people in the Corolla had requested privacy. He did say that both parties in the car sustained injuries as a result of the crash, and the man had gunshot wounds. “Based on evidence, we believe there was another vehicle at the scene,” he said. RCMP say they received a report about a burned vehicle in St. Lawrence, near Miminegash in western Prince County, that was found 12 hours after the shooting. That community is about 60 kilometres from the Hackmatack Road crime scene. (Google Earth)”Police are also investigating a report of a burned vehicle located in St. Lawrence, near Miminegash, reported at approximately 8:15 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 9, which may be linked to this case.” That location in western Prince County is about 60 kilometres from Urbainville. Questions about lack of alertSince news of the shooting emerged Saturday morning, hundreds of people have been sharing rumours on social media about what happened. Many asked why police had not confirmed whether they were seeking a specific suspect or alerting people living near where the perpetrator could be hiding out. “We deploy this tool when the criteria is met,” Moore said of the Alert Ready system. “For us to use public alerting, we have to have information… that can help protect Islanders, and alerts are used to get safety information to people as quickly as possible.”Hackmatack Road has both paved and unpaved sections. Police say the shooting and crash occurred on a dirt section of the road that is not heavily travelled. (CBC)That wasn’t the case here, he said. “This shooting appeared to have been a targeted attack,” Moore said. “The perpetrator had fled the area and there was very little information about the perpetrator to share, and there was no evidence that the perpetrator was targeting the public at large.”The RCMP Major Crime Unit is the lead investigating body, with forensic, canine and traffic support as well as help from Summerside and Kensington’s police agencies and the P.E.I.
