It says investigators interviewed six RCMP officers and six civilians about the incident.“Following a comprehensive review of the evidence gathered during the course of SIRT’s investigation, it was determined that reasonable grounds existed to believe that an offence had been committed by the Subject Officer,” the report stated.The arrested officer is not named in the report. The officer was released on bail and is scheduled to appear in Lloydminster Provincial Court on Dec. 11.SIRT is withholding certain details because the matter is now in court, according to the report. But SIRT shared some information about the incident last year.The first call to Maidstone RCMP came in around 7:14 a.m. CST on April 3, 2024. A concerned relative requested a wellness check on a 68-year-old man at a home in the Rural Municipality of Britannia, an area that sits along the Saskatchewan/Alberta border just north of Lloydminster.An on-call member of the Maidstone RCMP detachment was dispatched, but RCMP confirmed that no one physically checked on the man. More than nine hours later, at 4:30 p.m. CST, the relative called RCMP again and requested an update on the wellness check. At 4:39 p.m. CST the RCMP officer originally dispatched to the request left the Maidstone department.A second relative called RCMP around 5:01 p.m. CST and said they went to the 68-year-old’s house and he was seriously injured, but still alive.RCMP officers then went to the home and found the man, who was taken to hospital where he later died.According to the Criminal Code of Canada, “Every official who, in connection with the duties of their office, commits fraud or a breach of trust, whether or not the fraud or breach of trust would be an offence if it were committed in relation to a private person, is guilty of (a) an indictable offence and liable to imprisonment for a term of not more than five years; or (b) an offence punishable on summary conviction.”ABOUT THE AUTHORJeremy Warren is a reporter in Saskatoon.
