The Summerside Curling and Marina Complex, formerly known as the Silver Fox Entertainment Complex, was purchased by the city earlier this year after. The volunteer board that had been running the Silver Fox approached the city earlier this year asking it to take over the operation, and its $525,000 of debt. JP Desrosiers, Summerside’s chief administrative officer, said the city’s parks and recreation department will take over operations of the facility. That mean municipal staff are responsible for maintaining it — something that may come as a relief to members of the curling association.J.P. Desrosiers, Summerside’s chief administrative officer, says the the city bought the former Silver Fox complex for about $425,000, and invested around $100,000 into the renovations. (Jane Robertson/CBC)”Now they can focus on curling advocacy and growing membership and to make their club more viable, leaving… the operational elements and tasks to the city,” Desrosiers said. Former Summerside mayor Bill Martin is a curler at the facility, and was one of the people on a committee encouraging the city to buy the complex. Martin said membership has been going up over the past year, with 16 teams playing on the main curling night. There curling association included around 195 members last year, he said, and that number has since increased to 225.Bill Martin was on a committee that encouraged the City of Summerside to buy the facility. He says the curling association’s membership has increased this year. (Jane Robertson/CBC)Martin said the city taking ownership of the complex allowed the curling club to stay put. “Had it gone on the open market, which was the alternative to approaching the city, chances are the curling would be gone,” Martin said. “A new owner may have converted what you’re looking at out there to winter storage or condos.”‘Elevated level of hospitality’The city’s purchase price was roughly $425,000, which Desrosiers said was mainly to clear the previous owners’ debt. So far, Summerside has put an additional $100,000 into renovations.”Council saw the importance of investing in our downtown and our waterfront and having some level of control over what occurred here,” he said. “We’re standing here today in a facility that, you know, a few months ago was on the verge of potentially closing to seeing 30 or 40 seniors out here today curling.”Some of those renovations include new change rooms, new signs on the outside of the building and a new restaurant operated by the owners of Bogside Brewing in Montague.David McGuire said the hope is to have the restaurant open in time for the summer tourism season.”The ability to bring, hopefully soon, an elevated level of hospitality to curling is interesting because [of] the social aspect of the game,” McGuire said.”Afterwards it’s all about getting together and enjoying a beverage and a story and a laugh with your team and your opponents.”ABOUT THE AUTHORJenna Banfield is an associate producer for CBC Prince Edward Island.
