(Phichet Chaiyabin/Shutterstock)Saskatchewan has recorded one new case of measles, and health officials say the patient required intensive care.According to the latest data from the province, the case is the second ICU admission linked to measles this year. The patient is in the 55+ age group and had an unknown or unclear vaccination status, according to the province.As of Oct. 22, there had been 96 confirmed measles cases in Saskatchewan since an outbreak began in mid-March.Ten people have been hospitalized and two have required intensive care. No deaths have been reported due to measles this year, according to the province’s data.Most infections have been in children and teens, and nearly 90 per cent of all cases were in people who were unvaccinated.Health officials say unimmunized residents in or travelling to Rosthern, Preeceville, Theodore, Foam Lake and the surrounding areas are at higher risk of exposure. Those communities have seen community-based transmission, meaning measles is spreading locally and it’s not clear where the cases originally came from.The province is urging people to check their vaccination records and make sure they’ve received two doses of the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine.Measles symptoms include:Fever.Cough.Runny nose.Red eyes.Blotchy, red rash that appears a few days after the fever starts.
