(Albert Couillard/CBC)Saskatchewan’s police oversight body is now investigating a man’s death in police custody.Saskatoon Police said a 35-year-old man died in detention Tuesday morning. The man was brought into custody for multiple alleged assaults in Saskatoon’s Pleasant Hill neighbourhood, just across the street from St. Paul’s Hospital.That incident was reported to police at about 8:50 A.M. CST. The victims were alleged to be a 40-year-old woman and a 5-year-old girl. Police have not identified anyone in the situation, nor the cause of death for the man in custody.The SPS claims the man went into medical distress at roughly 9:30 a.m. Under the police act, his death was reported to Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT). Now, SIRT’s Civilian Executive Director has accepted carriage of the investigation, and the SPS Serious Assault Unit continues to investigate the incident from earlier that morning.ABOUT THE AUTHORAlex Kozroski is a reporter with CBC News in Regina.
