(Alexander Quon/CBC News)Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe has returned from a brief trade mission to the United States, where he met with high ranking officials from U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration. Moe said he held meetings with U.S. Trade Representative Ambassador Jamieson Greer, Secretary of Treasury Scott Bessent and Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday. All of the discussions were focused on how best to restart trade talks between Canada and the United States, Moe said. “We’re there to advocate specifically on behalf of Saskatchewan, but ensure that we are supportive and doing things that are supportive of getting, in this case, restarting negotiations between Canada and the United States,” Moe told reporters at a news conference on Wednesday. Last month, Trump announced on social media that he would terminate all trade negotiations with Canada over an advertisement paid for by the Ontario government. As of Wednesday, talks between the two countries had yet to resume. Moe said he began planning for the trip as soon as Trump announced that negotiations were being cancelled. “What is good for Saskatchewan is also good for Canada,” Moe said. The premier confirmed he spoke with Dominic Leblanc, the federal minister responsible for Canada-U.S. trade, as well as Prime Minister Mark Carney before travelling to Washington, D.C.Moe said he was made keenly aware of the ongoing sensitivities between the United States and Canada, including discussion around the planned acquisition of F-35 fighter aircraft. That was to ensure he was on the same page as the federal government, which may not have been the case with former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. “We welcome that and we welcome Prime Minister Carney’s efforts to raise Canada’s credibility in the international sphere,” Moe said. The Saskatchewan NDP Opposition criticized Moe’s trip. NDP finance critic Trent Wotherspoon said he wants to see results and progress on trade talks, not just confirmation that the premier has met with U.S. officials.
