(Saskatoon Court of King’s Bench)A former Terror Squad member testified Wednesday that Nykera Brown was on a mission to help punish another gang member the night she died in 2022.Andrew Rosenfeldt is on trial on a charge of second-degree murder before Justice Heather MacMillan-Brown at Court of King’s Bench. Catherine “Cat” Iron began testifying Tuesday. On Wednesday, she was accompanied to court by three police officers as security because of safety concerns raised after her first day on the stand. She and her common-law partner Cole Zimmerman, both members of the Terror Squad, according to Iron, had gone to Rosenfeldt’s Avenue P apartment on the evening of Nov. 15, 2022.Iron testified that all four were in the gang, with Brown recently getting an elevated position that allowed her to get a “2019” gang tattoo on her chest. Iron said the four sat around smoking meth and drinking from a 26-ounce bottle of vodka she had in a backpack. She said she knew Rosenfeldt sold meth because she had bought it from him before.Iron said she noticed a foot-long gun wrapped in tape on the bed and asked Brown to move it.Brown put on a pair of gloves, to avoid leaving fingerprints, and moved the gun. In the police crime scene photos shown earlier in the trial, with Brown’s body on the floor, she is wearing black gloves.Andrew Rosenfeldt is charged with second-degree murder in the 2022 death of Nykera Brown. (Saskatoon Court of King’s Bench)When asked whether Brown was intoxicated, Iron replied, “not intoxicated, just buzzed up.”The three — Iron, Zimmerman and Brown — left the apartment after an hour to meet a mutual friend who lived in a tent behind Prairie Harm Reduction, Iron said. They intended to walk on 20th Street to get fresh air. Going on a ‘lick’On Tuesday, Iron testified that a “lick” is a gang term for stripping a member of their gang insignia, or flag, for having done something wrong. On Wednesday, defence lawyer Chris Murphy cross-examined Iron on the connection between “going on a walk” and a “lick.””Did you ever tell Nykera Brown that we’re going on a lick,” he asked.”A walk is a lick,” Iron replied.”So, on the evening of Nov. 15, 2022, you were going on a mission, correct?” he said.”Yes,” she replied.”To do harm to a fellow gang member?” Murphy asked.”I do not recall,” Iron said.ABOUT THE AUTHORDan Zakreski is a reporter in Saskatoon.
