(CBC/Radio-Canada)P.E.I.’s French-language school board has confirmed it’s co-operating with RCMP after a Prince County teacher was charged with sexual assault. On Monday, police announced 48-year-old Roger Mbahia had been charged with sexual assault and sexual interference after an investigation that began on Sept. 25. According to the Criminal Code of Canada, sexual interference charges refer specifically to someone under the age of 16 being touched “directly or indirectly, with a part of the body or with an object” for a sexual purpose.Police didn’t say what the accused’s connection to the victim is or what school he worked at, but the École Pierre-Chiasson website listed a Roger M’bahia as a teacher as of Monday afternoon. That name has since been removed from the school’s website. The school is located in the Prince County community of Deblois, about eight kilometres south of Tignish. In a Facebook post on Tuesday, La Commission scolaire de langue francaise (CSLF) said RCMP informed the board about the charges late Monday afternoon. The CSLF said in an email to CBC News on Wednesday that families and staff “at the school involved” had been, but didn’t confirm where the teacher worked.”The CSLF has been working closely with the RCMP since the beginning of this investigation and continues to follow established processes to ensure the investigation continues with the necessary respect and rigor,” the email reads.”The safety and well-being of students remains our top priority. Support measures are being offered to students and staff who feel they need them.”Letter sent to parentsPaige Graham, a parent at École Pierre-Chiasson and member of the home and school group, confirmed a letter went out to parents informing them of the situation, but said no further details had been released.Graham said she believes the CSLF is doing everything it can to support and protect students, families and staff at the school.”It’s very extremely shocking and unfortunate,” she said. “[It’s] shocking that it even occurred. Our children are so vulnerable and, you know, when the school board is hiring staff they do everything they can to hire people that are supposed to be trusting and a safe space for our families … But a background check doesn’t always tell you everything you need to know about a person.”Police said Mbahia had been a teacher in P.E.I. for approximately three weeks before his arrest. The P.E.I. Teachers’ Federation declined to comment.
