(Town of Stratford)The Town of Stratford plans to build a 4,000-square-foot pavilion on its waterfront in hopes the location will become a hub for residents and events. “It’s a beautiful view,” said Coun. Steve Gallant, chair of the town’s infrastructure committee. “It’ll create conversation…. [You can] sit down, have a coffee.” The pavilion will sit next to the Michael Thomas Monument and look out over the Hillsborough River. It will have indoor and outdoor spaces for people to gather, as well as washrooms and a commercial kitchen. It’s expected to cost $2.4 million to build. Stratford council approved nearly $1.5 million of its own money for the project, and has applied for provincial and federal funding to cover the rest. “The town is growing. We’re moving forward,” Gallant said, noting that the Stratford community campus is also beginning to take shape. That area, located between the Stratford Business Park and Bunbury Road, is intended to become the sport and cultural area of the town.Meanwhile, Gallant said the town’s developing waterfront will become the spot for events like Canada Day celebrations and the town’s Santa Claus parade.’It’s going to be just so relaxing, and especially in that area of the waterfront,’ Gallant says of the pavilion, which will have an indoor seating area for 60-75 people, as shown in this rendering. (Town of Stratford)While the new pavilion will be located on the site of the town’s former sewage lagoon, Gallant said there are no concerns about odours. The town’s wastewater now flows through a pipeline to the Charlottetown Pollution Control Plant, and has since 2021. Gallant said construction on the pavilion will start in April, and the town hopes the building will be done by November 2026.ABOUT THE AUTHORMarilee Devries is a journalist with CBC P.E.I.
