Summerside’s East-West Housing Corridor to be called Ryan Street unless name is changed

A drone image shows where The East-West Housing Corridor intersects with Water Street East. The still under-construction road has been called a “generational project” for Summerside – something that could help shape the city well into the future. ContributedArticle contentDespite the fact that, in true Maritimer fashion, it’s likely going to be known colloquially as the East-West Connector for a long time, Summerside is trying to decide what official name to give its new thoroughfare.THIS CONTENT IS RESERVED FOR SUBSCRIBERS ONLY.Subscribe now to access this story and more:Unlimited access to the website and appExclusive access to premium content, newsletters and podcastsFull access to the e-Edition app, an electronic replica of the print edition that you can share, download and comment onEnjoy insights and behind-the-scenes analysis from our award-winning journalistsSupport local journalists and the next generation of journalistsSUBSCRIBE TO UNLOCK MORE ARTICLES.Subscribe or sign in to your account to continue your reading experience.Unlimited access to the website and appExclusive access to premium content, newsletters and podcastsFull access to the e-Edition app, an electronic replica of the print edition that you can share, download and comment onEnjoy insights and behind-the-scenes analysis from our award-winning journalistsSupport local journalists and the next generation of journalistsRegister to unlock more articles.Create an account or sign in to continue your reading experience.Access additional stories every monthShare your thoughts and join the conversation in our commenting communityGet email updates from your favourite authorsSign In or Create an AccountorArticle contentSummerside city council recently tackled the subject of what to call the long-gestating East-West Housing Corridor (aka East-West Connector), which is the project moniker for the new road stretching from Water Street East to the intersection of Ryan Street and MacEwan Road.Article contentArticle contentArticle contentWith the 1.6-kilometre road nearing completion, it’s time to start making the signage that needs to be in place before it opens to traffic.Article contentAt the Sept. 2 council meeting, city planning staff asked council for input on what to name the new main road and three stub streets that branch off from it.Article content The still-under-construction East-West Housing Corridor in Summerside intersects with The Confederation Trail and will eventually help connect active transportation routes to Rotary Friendship Park in the city’s north end. ContributedArticle contentName selection processArticle contentSeveral years ago, the city formed a committee to put together a list of pre-approved street names with historical and cultural significance to Summerside. Anytime a developer builds a new street, they can choose a name from the list and continue on with their project, but if they want to use a name not on the list, it must be vetted by the relevant parties and approved by council first.Article contentIn this case, the city is the developer, so staff went to the pre-approved list, made some suggestions and asked council for their top three options for each road. Each name has to be double-checked with provincial services to avoid conflicts that could interfere with emergency services, so if one name on the short-list doesn’t work, the idea was that staff could just move on to the next.Article contentArticle contentThere was some back and forth around the council table about what names would be most appropriate and what residents in the area wanted, as relayed by the councillor for the ward, Carrie Adams.Article contentArticle contentStaff went away with a top-three list for two of the stub streets. The third will connect to the existing Cardinal Street, so it was agreed that it would just be a continuation of that name.Article contentStreet name optionsArticle contentThe three options for Street A, which would go east and connect to the Woodridge Place subdivision, were Woodridge, Sunrise and Capital (though Woodridge is not on the pre-approved street name list).Article contentStreet B will go west off the main road and will just be a dead-end stub until it’s developed sometime in the future. Its three options are Hall, Olympia and Enman.Article contentBut when it came down to what to call the main section of the new road, there was pushback from some councillors against just picking a name off the pre-approved list.
