(Tyson Koschik/CBC)A 37-year-old man is dead and a person is in custody after a shooting in Wasagamack Anisininew Nation, Manitoba RCMP say.Mounties were called to the community around 12:30 a.m. to investigate reports of gunshots and a man who was dead outside a home in the First Nation, police said in a news release Friday.Alex McDougall, acting grand chief of Anisininew Okimawin — a coalition that represents Wasagamack and three other First Nations in the Island Lake Region — said leadership from the community told him there had been a fatal shooting early Friday morning.”It’s very frustrating.… We are at a very different stage, something that we’ve not seen in our community of this magnitude,” he said. “It’s a crisis that I have not witnessed myself.”There’s going to be a lot of support required to the community and to the extended family that are directly impacted by this tragic incident.” Wasagamack, which is about 470 kilometres northeast of Winnipeg in the Island Lake region, was put under lockdown, with schools and public facilities closed, while authorities searched for a suspect on Friday, McDougall said. A male was taken into custody but police didn’t confirm his age or whether he had been charged. Mounties said the death is being investigated as a homicide by the RCMP major crime services unit.
