In the election Thursday, 185 people voted for Heron as chief while 136 voted for competitor Frieda Martselos. Heron previously served as chief in a term a saddled with conflict, including months of suspensions that the court later stayed. Returning officer Jeri Miltenberger said there isn’t yet an official declaration for the councillor positions since one position was only one vote apart. There are six councillor positions. Miltenberger said results of the recount will be ready by 3 p.m. Friday. A majority of voters also backed new membership laws in a referendum — 145 voted yes, 72 voted no.
