(CBC)Anyone with plans to cross Halifax harbour this weekend should anticipate heavier than normal traffic due to a bridge closure and road work.The A. Murray MacKay Bridge will be closed to all traffic from 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 24, to 5:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 27. The ramp from Lady Hammond Road to Highway 111 will be closed during the same period to prepare the Windsor Street Exchange site for a future overpass.Halifax Harbour Bridges said in a news release the bridge closure will be weather dependent — “particularly for wind” — as large cranes are required for the work.Although the bridge is expected to reopen Monday, the Princess Margaret Boulevard south ramp will remain closed for the day while the back ramp of the MacKay Bridge garage is demolished.Halifax Harbour Bridges is encouraging people to use public transit, noting that the ferry service will be free while the bridge is closed. The Angus L. Macdonald Bridge will be open.North End road workIn addition to the weekend ramp closure for the Windsor Street Exchange project, the Halifax Regional Municipality said there will be temporary evening and overnight lane reductions on Highway 111. “Minor traffic delays are expected for two to three weeks. This overnight work will take place after the evening rush hour to minimize impacts on traffic flow,” the municipality said in a news release. Traffic delays are also expected for Forrester, Bayne and Mackintosh streets “to accommodate early construction” near the Windsor Street Exchange.
