(Jeff McIntosh/The Canadian Press)Heavy fog led to a close call for two semi-trailer drivers on Wednesday at a rural Manitoba train crossing. According to St. Pierre-Jolys RCMP, police responded to reports of a train collision around 7:28 a.m. Wednesday morning on Highway 23, at Road 18 East, near Dufrost, in the RM of DeSalaberry.Police say a semi-trailer was travelling west on Highway 23 and attempted to stop at the train crossing, but couldn’t stop on time. To avoid a collision, RCMP say the driver swerved into the ditch on the north side of the road.Another semi-trailer hauling gravel, also travelling west, hit the back end of the train before catching fire. The train was able to continue its route after the collision, RCMP said.A 53-year-old male from Winnipeg who was driving the first truck was taken to hospital “for precautionary measures,” RCMP said. A 57-year-old male from the RM of Montcalm was driving the second truck, and was uninjured.Heavy fog present in the area was a “contributing factor” in the crash, police said. RCMP said on Wednesday afternoon that Highway 23 will be closed until further notice due to roadway damage and debris on the road. St. Pierre-Jolys RCMP and CP officials continue the investigation.More from CBC Manitoba:
