(Daniel Brown/CBC)The Charlottetown Gaudet’s Auto Body Islanders are still revelling in their national championship victory.A crowd at Red Shores Racetrack & Casino helped celebrate the team on Saturday.The Islanders became the first P.E.I. team to win a national baseball title when they beat Quebec to take the Canadian senior men’s gold medal in Regina in late August.”We’re brothers for life,” said first baseman Josh Myers. “We’ll always remember this, always remember the moment, always remember the big game, always remember everything.”The celebration began with the team bus driving down the track. Each player was then introduced to the crowd.JP Stevenson, one of the coaches, says the team understood that winning the championship was attainable, and it was “pure joy” to see that goal come to fruition.Myers, left, Stevenson, middle, and Arsenault have high hopes for a championship repeat next year. (Jenna Banfield/CBC)”We worked so hard for each other and sacrificed so much for each other,” Stevenson said. “And just to have that moment and soak it in with all the guys and the team … it was incredible.”Another team member, Jonathan Arsenault, said it was all “surreal.””For a small province, you don’t really expect that kind of result at a national level,” he said.The players say their goal now is to win again.Lee Drake, manager of racing, marketing and sales at Red Shores, said the track wanted to celebrate the win.”We may be Canada’s smallest province, but we have so much pride and talent that comes out of this, whether it’s baseball, whether it’s harness racing, whether it’s hockey, any other sports, soccer, you name it.”ABOUT THE AUTHORJenna Banfield is an associate producer for CBC Prince Edward Island.
