‘What’s on your mind?’: Walk with a Cop happening at Truro mall

It’s an opportunity to chat with local law police officers and get a bit of exercisePublished Apr 17, 2025  •  2 minute readTruro Police Services community policing officer Cst. Terry Moser chuckled when asked if he was familiar with an initiative run out of the Rath Eastlink Community Centre (RECC) in past years called Walk with a Doc.“I do recall,” Moser said of the program that offered anyone interested in an opportunity to join local health professionals for a healthy morning walk around the RECC’s track, where they could also pose any health-related questions in a relaxed atmosphere.THIS CONTENT IS RESERVED FOR SUBSCRIBERS ONLY.Subscribe now to access this story and more:Unlimited access to the website and appExclusive access to premium content, newsletters and podcastsFull access to the e-Edition app, an electronic replica of the print edition that you can share, download and comment onEnjoy insights and behind-the-scenes analysis from our award-winning journalistsSupport local journalists and the next generation of journalistsSUBSCRIBE TO UNLOCK MORE ARTICLES.Subscribe or sign in to your account to continue your reading experience.Unlimited access to the website and appExclusive access to premium content, newsletters and podcastsFull access to the e-Edition app, an electronic replica of the print edition that you can share, download and comment onEnjoy insights and behind-the-scenes analysis from our award-winning journalistsSupport local journalists and the next generation of journalistsRegister to unlock more articles.Create an account or sign in to continue your reading experience.Access additional stories every monthShare your thoughts and join the conversation in our commenting communityGet email updates from your favourite authorsSign In or Create an AccountorArticle contentFor some local folks, it was the first place they met Dr. Stephen Ellis who was an initiator of the program and a regular health professional walker, before he was elected as the Cumberland-Colchester MP, representing the Conservative Party, in 2021.“Truth be told, I’ve kind of adopted the idea from that,” Moser said with a smile. “I thought it was a great idea.“Medical questions, law enforcement issues, these are important concerns for people in the community. So, I thought, what a wonderful idea to invite people for a walk, in a comfortable environment, and just ask them, ‘What is on your mind?’”Moser has started a program called Walk with a Cop which takes place Tuesday and Thursday mornings at the Hub Shopping Centre on Robie Street in Truro. Folks meet with officers at the food court in the mall at 8 a.m. That will provide plenty of time for a stroll or two up and down the mall, and plenty of questions, before the stores open at 9 a.m.Moser said he and other officers understand that people often have questions for law enforcement but are never sure when it’s a good time to approach them, and don’t always want to do so in a formal environment.Article content“This will be that opportunity to come and ask any questions,” he said. “And just chat away.”He said that with senior folks, he anticipates questions about scams and fraud attempts will be at the top of their lists.“But, really, any areas of concern from people in the community and surrounding communities, who may like to join us, we can talk about,” he said. “And then it’s a chance for me to relay that back to senior police administration.”Judy Putnam and Jeanette McNutt were a couple of the folks joining Moser as well as Cst. Jonathan Galway for a walk on the first day of the program on April 17.“We think it’s a good idea,” Putnam said. “I went in to talk to him the other day and he told me this would be happening so I’m here.”McNutt said she saw it advertised.“And then we (and her Putnam) talked about it and decided to be here,” she said.Moser said anytime Truro Police Services have a chance to engage with the community, in a comfortable and accessible environment, they will endeavour to make it happen.“Be boots on the ground, in the neighbourhoods, and make those connections with community members,” he said. “One hundred per cent, that is a goal of ours.” Participants in a past Walk with a Doc session at the Rath Eastlink Community Centre track.
