Whitehorse thrift store distributes grants for community projects

The Whitehorse Community Thrift Store Society has announced the local organizations that will benefit from its Sharing Our Success program. The thrift store society is giving out $30,000 to 10 community groups with grants ranging from $1,000 to $5,000. Per a funding announcement, the projects receiving grants align with the thrift store’s mission: promoting sustainability, community engagement and local culture.  The United Church is receiving $2,000 for bag lunch and laundry service.  ReDesign Fair will get $2,000 for a feasibility study for a ReStore.  The Yukon Literacy Coalition is set to receive $3,000 for a learning garden program. They had asked for funds to purchase supplies and hire agricultural specialists in support of this work. The Yukon Anti Poverty Coalition is also getting a gardening project funded with $3,500 going to its backyard gardening program.  Lorne Mountain Community Association’s reNewed Festival is receiving $5,000. Raven Recyling will receive $5,000 to support its zero waste outreach programming for 2025/26. Meeting room space for Yukon Artists at Work will be funded for $1,500 The Yukon Global Village Fair 2025 is receiving $3,000.  The Guild Hall Society’s Round Back Festival is getting $4,000 The Yukon Food Security Network will receive  $1,000 for its 2025 Diversifying Food Systems Conference.  The funding announcement from the thrift store notes that a $3,060 donation was made to the Whitehorse Food Bank earlier this year separate from the Sharing Our Success program. “These grants are not just about financial support; they are about empowering local organizations to achieve their goals and create lasting, positive change in our community,” said thrift store society board member Bruce Bennett.  Contact Jim Elliot at jim.elliot@yukon-news.com
