(Carolyn Ryan/CBC)Unexpected winds Saturday morning caused backups at ferry terminals on both sides of the Northumberland Strait, according to the company that operates the vessels. Winds picked up to over 55 km/h just before the MV Confederation was set to leave its berth in Wood Islands, P.E.I., at 10 a.m., said Northumberland Ferries Limited general manager Jeff Joyce. Those conditions, coupled with a dredging operation happening in the strait, meant that Confederation had to delay its departure until it was safe to do so. The concern, said Joyce, was that the ferry needed enough room to navigate safely around the barge carrying out the dredging work. The company opted to hold the ship at the wharf until the winds died down. Winds picked up to over 55 km/h just before MV Confederation was set to leave its berth in Wood Islands at 10 a.m., said Northumberland Ferries Limited general manager Jeff Joyce. (Carolyn Ryan/CBC)Northumberland Ferries’ second vessel, MV Northumberland, was also held in port at Caribou, N.S., until it was safe for the Confederation to sail. Officials said both ferries were beginning to load passengers again just after 11 a.m., but that the disruption could cause delays to other crossings Saturday.
