(CBC)The Winnipeg fire department has issued a two-week fire ban, barring residents from using some barbecues, fire pits and lighting fireworks until mid-May. The ban begins Monday night at 6 p.m. and lasts until 6 p.m. on May 19, the city said in a release Monday. During this time, Winnipeggers are not allowed to start open fires, use fire pits in backyards or city parks, light fireworks or use solid fuel-burning appliances, like charcoal and wood-burning barbecues.The ban applies to permit-holders, the city said. Permits are suspended during the ban, and no new permits will be issued over the next two weeks. The city says fire tables and propane or gas barbecues are allowed but should be used with caution. There is a $500 fine for anyone breaking the fire ban, the city said. The city asks residents to report fires to 911 or call 311 if they see anyone breaking the rules.
