She returned a gold wedding band to its rightful owner after Friday night’s festivities. (Mike Evans/CBC)Simone Hildebrand-Thiessen and her two young kids were sorting through a treasure trove of Halloween goodies when the Winnipeg mom realized they’d picked up more than candy.Although she initially thought it was a toy, Hildebrand-Thiessen says a gold wedding band slipped into her kids bags as they trick-or-treated in North Kildonan on Friday night.”It looked like it belonged to a man and it looked old. It looked like it had been well-used and loved,” she told guest host Marjorie Dowhos in an interview Tuesday on CBC Manitoba’s Information Radio.”This is precious to somebody.”To try to find the ring’s owner, Hildebrand-Thiessen posted about it on a local Facebook group.Simone Hildebrand-Thiessen returned the ring to its rightful owner after her post on a local Facebook group helped them connect. (CBC)”I was really a little overwhelmed by the response,” she said.”So many people commenting and sharing and responding and liking the post and then — within a few hours, actually — I got a message from a woman saying, ‘I think this is my brother’s.'”The man, who lives around the corner from Hildebrand-Thiessen, was reunited with his ring on Sunday after texting Hildebrand-Thiessen the correct description of the wedding band, she said.”My husband actually dropped it off with our daughter and said that the owner was just really, really grateful,” she said. The man said he realized his ring fell off sometime on Friday evening, but he didn’t know what to do, Hildebrand-Thiessen said.”You can’t run down the street and call after kids, ‘Hey, did you get a ring in your bag?'”She thinks he just didn’t notice when the ring fell off.”Our fingers change as we age, and it’s cold out there on Halloween,” she said. “It just slid off his finger as he dropped candy into a bag.”She’s relieved that she could return the sentimental item, as it was unclear whether her Facebook post would work. She also wanted to be a model for her kids, so they learn to return things that aren’t theirs, she said. “I was really happy that we could return it, and that it’s able to go back to the owner and represent the commitments and their marriage.”With files from Djeneba Dosso
