(Chelsea Kemp/CBC)The mother of a baby who died from fentanyl intoxication in Winnipeg more than two years ago has pleaded guilty in the death of her child.Sabrina Faye Boulette pleaded guilty to manslaughter for failing to provide the necessaries of life in the death of one-year-old Hanna Boulette during a hearing before provincial court Justice Darcie Yale last week.Emergency services went to Boulette’s home on Stella Avenue on March 2023, after a man called 911 to tell him his child was unresponsive.Paramedics administered CPR and took the baby to hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Police charged the child’s father, Garry Daniel Adrian Bruce, with possession of a controlled substance after officers found a small amount of fentanyl on him, but both were released. Police said last winter autopsy and toxicology reports later determined high levels of fentanyl intoxication led to Hanna’s death. The couple was arrested and charged with manslaughter in February 2024. Police said they were not truthful about the circumstances lead the child’s death when they were first interviewed by investigators, and that they didn’t call 911 until several hours after they found she’d been exposed to the drug.On Tuesday, provincial court Justice Mary Kate Harvie denied Bruce’s bail application. His trial has been set for January.Boulette’s sentence will be determined at a later date.ABOUT THE AUTHORArturo Chang is a reporter with CBC Manitoba.
