(Gian Paolo Mendoza/CBC)A woman is in critical condition after being shot inside a Surrey, B.C., home early Sunday morning, according to police.The Surrey Police Service (SPS) says officers were called to a residence in the 13000 block of 103A Avenue around 2:42 a.m. PT for reports of gunfire. When they arrived, paramedics were providing life-saving treatment to an adult woman who had suffered a gunshot wound. She was taken to hospital, where she remains in critical condition.Police say several adults were inside the home at the time of the shooting but were not injured. The victim, a South Asian woman in her mid-20s, was asleep when the shots were fired.Staff Sgt. Lindsey Houghton says early indications suggest a vehicle pulled up to the home before shots were fired from inside the vehicle. “Our officers will be interviewing and speaking with all of the individuals who were inside and, of course, canvassing neighbours to see if this was the house that was intended to be targeted,” Houghton said. Police say investigators from the Major Crime Section have taken over the case and are examining whether the shooting is connected to ongoing extortion investigations in the city.As of last week, the SPS says there have been 56 reported extortion-related cases and 31 connected shootings in the city this year.Officers are asking anyone who was in the area between 2:30 a.m. and 3 a.m. PT on Oct. 12, and may have witnessed the shooting or any suspicious activity, to contact investigators.
