(Kirk Fraser/CBC)Saskatchewan will have a “very important role” as Canadian yellow pea producers now grapple with tariffs in both of their major export markets, according to the province’s minister of trade and export. India will apply a new 30 per cent tariff on all imported yellow peas, beginning Nov. 1, The Canadian Press reported Thursday. That comes after China imposed a 100 per cent tariff on Canadian yellow peas, along with several other products, in March. Saskatchewan Trade Minister Warren Kaeding says the province’s trade office “is the highest-level office right now that is currently operating in India.””So I would say right now Saskatchewan is going to play a very important role in working through this issue with the Indian government,” Kaeding said. Canada and India have had a strained relationship since the countries’ diplomatic rupture over the 2023 killing of a Canadian Sikh leader in British Columbia, with both countries expelling the other’s top diplomats. Recent efforts have appeared to strengthen bilateral ties, and Kaeding said the new tariff was a surprise to the provincial government. “It wasn’t long ago we actually had been talking to the High Commissioner of India and hadn’t really [been] given an indication,” Kaeding said. The news comes after Saskatchewan Agriculture Minister Daryl Harrison sent a letter to the federal ministers of agriculture and international trade on Thursday. Harrison says Ottawa needs to immediately negotiate with India.Saskatchewan’s agriculture minister says together, India and China account for 71 per cent of the province’s pea exports. The province exported $480 million in peas to India in 2024.Harrison says trade uncertainty with the United States, along with tariffs from China and India, are “devastating” Canada’s agriculture industry. The tariff statement from India says it is being imposed to curb cheaper imports of yellow peas to support domestic farmers.
