Coroners inquest into 2020 police shooting death of Clyde River man will begin in October

Published 5:12 pm Friday, August 21, 2026 By William Koblensky Varela Local Journalism Initiative Northern News Service Abraham Moses Natanine was 31 years old when he was shot to death by the RCMP in Clyde River in 2020. Now, six year later, a coroner’s inquest will investigate the cause of his death and make recommendations to the police, as well as to the Government of Nunavut’s Department of Justice. The Ottawa Police Service cleared the RCMP of criminal wrongdoing in their investigation in 2020, when officers flew in to Clyde River to investigate. Coroner’s inquests do not result in legal proceedings, but instead make policy recommendations. The inquest into Natanine’s death will begin on Oct. 5 at 10 a.m. and is scheduled to end on Oct. 9. “The purpose of this inquest is to explore the circumstances surrounding the death of Mr. Abraham Natanine, who died on May 6, 2020, and to consider recommendations to prevent death in similar circumstances,” the Department of Justice stated on Aug. 21. Sheldon Toner, a lawyer for the coroner, will lead the inquest and Nunavut chief coroner Padma Suramala will also be involved. Clyde River residents who want to take part in the inquest can contact the Nunavut Coroner’s Office at 867-975-6562.
