Police said they determined that the incident was not criminal in nature. “The dog was tied outside of its residence and not loose. The youth walked onto the property and approached the tethered dog and unfortunately was injured,” the police stated. The city’s bylaw officers are continuing their investigation, the Mounties said. “The City of Iqaluit recognizes the serious concern within the community following the dog attack reported on Aug. 24, 2026. Incidents involving aggressive or at-large dogs can have a significant impact on residents, families and the broader community, and the city remains committed to supporting community safety through its animal control responsibilities,” the municipality stated on Aug. 25. So far in 2026, there have been 17 dog bite incidents reported and investigated by Iqaluit Municipal Enforcement, according to the city.
