Published 10:34 am Saturday, September 26, 2026 The Nunavut Trade Show wrapped up on Sept. 17 by awarding two businesses and three individuals for their contributions at Iqaluit’s Aqsarniit Hotel. Businessperson of the Year was awarded to Kirt Ejesiak, founder of the all-Inuit drone company Sedna ROV and Arctic UAV. “We have to invest and train Inuit so that we can take on these technological jobs of tomorrow,” Ejesiak said when accepting his award. “And I’m happy to say we’re seeing some success. We’re still surveying only a fraction of Arctic waters, and my hope is that we will do that for the next 10 to 20 years.” Business of the Year went to Arctic Fresh Projects, the construction arm of the grocery delivery company. Founder Rhoda Recinos gave an acceptance speech in Inuktitut, and co-CEO Albert Netser gave one in English. “We tell our field guys that we recognize that you need to grow, and you’re not perfect. And with the love in mind, with the patience and kindness and gentleness, and the extra effort we put into the people brings them to another level that we have never even expected…” Netser said. A special achievement award was given to Nunavut Nukkiksautiiit Corporation for its development of the Sanikiluaq wind power project. Chief operating officer Heather Shilton thanked the Qikiqtani Inuit Association leadership for guiding the renewable energy firm. “That’s what these renewable energy projects are about. Yes, they’re about reducing our carbon footprint, stabilizing electricity rates, making life more affordable and getting off expensive imported diesel that continues to harm our environment every day that we’re not using renewables,” Shilton said. “But these projects are about more than that. They’re about building strong communities for future generations.” Two Lifetime Achievement Awards were also given out at the gala. Glenn Cousins was recognized for his work at the economic development non-profit Kakivak Association, and the award was accepted by his son Max. The crowd gave Glenn Cousins a standing ovation. Rhoda Cunningham was posthumously given a Lifetime Achievement Award for founding the language company Innirvik Support Services. Her award was accepted by her widower, Duncan Cunningham, and her daughter Alexandra Cunningham.
