Unfortunately for Cape Breton, they trailed the game 1-0 after the first 20 minutes of play.Article contentArticle contentSaint John would take a 2-0 lead early in the second period on the power play. Cape Breton turned it up shortly after and eventually took the lead before the end of the fame.Article contentCape Breton may not have scored in the first period, but it wasn’t like they weren’t creating chances. When you’re not creating chances and getting pucks to the net, that’s when the real problem begins.Article contentThe Eagles had outshot the Sea Dogs 25-9 at the midway point of the game.Article contentArticle contentSTRONG FORECHECKArticle contentA lot of Cape Breton’s success in generating scoring chances throughout the game came off the forecheck. The Eagles were relentless on the forecheck, causing the Sea Dogs defencemen to turn the puck over on several occasions.Article contentThe results may not be coming yet, but a strong forecheck and pressure in the offensive zone will eventually pay off over time.Article contentArticle contentSECOND PERIOD DOMINANCEArticle contentAfter Cape Breton went down 2-0 early in the second period, the Eagles responded well and dominated the play in the middle stanza.Article contentThe Eagles would get on the board with a Derek Andrews goal at 6:50 before Elias Schneider tied the game at 12:48. JEREMY FRASER/CAPE BRETON POST Jeremy FraserArticle content——————————————————————COACH SAYS:Article content“I thought we played really well tonight, we just had a hard time trying to solve (Samuel) Meloche tonight. We had a couple of really good chances that should have maybe gone in behind him. It’s not ultimately the result we wanted, but the coaching staff is really happy with how we played together as a team.” – Cape Breton Eagles head coach Jason Clarke on his team’s overall play on Friday.Article contentArticle content“Liam had a great week of practice. He was put in a tough spot last weekend with flying back from LA and having a long training camp. We were really happy with how he grinded it out last weekend. He was a little bit more fresh, obviously, for tonight’s game and he had an extra step and was able to make some plays that he just couldn’t make the weekend before.” – Cape Breton Eagles head coach Jason Clarke on the play of Liam Lefebvre on FridayArticle content“We talked about getting more stuff to the net after the first period. We had some really good chances in the first period, but I still didn’t think that we generated enough second and third chances. There were rebounds that were open in the first period, but I thought we did a much better job in the second period of creating and generating second and third chances, getting on both sides of the posts and getting in front of the net. We just need to do more of that and be way more consistent with directing stuff to the net.” – Cape Breton Eagles head coach Jason Clarke on his team’s dominance in the second period on Friday.Article content Alonso Gosselin, right, looks towards the net as he’s chased by Cameron Chartrand of the Saint John Sea Dogs during Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League action at Centre 200 in Sydney on Friday.
