Kings College Schools 1965-66 championship hockey team reunites in Windsor

Photo by Jim IveyArticle contentParis said what made the win so special was the fact it was a small school, which didn’t have nearly as many students to draw from as other schools in the province.Article content“So we were the little engine that could, and we believed in ourselves,” he said.Article contentArticle contentA quality hockey teamArticle contentThe team, coached by Peter (Punch) Stuart, was inducted into the Windsor Hockey Heritage Society’s Birthplace of Hockey Hall of Fame on March 3, 2001.Article contentAccording to a story in the Hants Journal in 2001, then headmaster John Derrick “encouraged five town boys to attend KCS and take part in the outstanding sport program which he had developed for the school.”Article contentArticle contentThe group of Windsor boys consisted of Billy Boyd, Bob Fowler, Brian Mosher, Paris, and team captain Joe Robertson.Article content“I’m not going to say they were the heart of the team because the team had a big heart, and it was all inclusive,” Paris said.Article content“But the guys that were born and raised in Windsor and went to King’s College School, played such a vital role in that championship win – and it was one that was shared and embraced by all.”Article contentThe 15-member team, which included two goaltenders, was comprised of players from across the province, Newfoundland, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Ontario, New York, and California.Article content These Windsor hockey players, from left, Percy Paris, Bill Boyd, Brian Mosher (standing), Joe Robertson, and Bob Fowler, were credited with bringing something special to the 1965-66 Kings College School’s hockey team. Jim Ivey Photo by Jim IveyArticle contentThe Headmasters Provincial Championship win was the first time in the school’s then-178-year history.Article content“That team that won that championship in the year ‘65-66 was made up of a very unique group of individuals,” Paris said.Article content“For us to accomplish that, it was a memory that stayed with all of us.”Article contentHe said the team’s bond transcends time.Article content“I want to emphasize the calibre of high school hockey 60 years ago,” Paris said when asked about the team’s achievement.
