Published 3:10 pm Tuesday, August 4, 2026 During the heat of the afternoon of the long weekend, police responded to a drowning at W.J. Tuey Regional Park in Enderby. A missing nine-year-old child drew Vernon North Okanagan RCMP to the Shuswap River park on Waterwheel Street Monday, Aug. 3 at approximately 2:45 p.m. A family, visiting from Calgary, Alta., was spending the afternoon at the river when family members briefly lost sight of the child and it was presumed the child was under water and had failed to surface. As authorities were contacted, numerous bystanders began the search the water for the child. One bystander dove underwater and located the child submerged and pinned against fallen deadwood by the current. The child was brought to shore and bystanders, including a doctor and nurses, commenced CPR until the ambulance arrived. “This tragic incident highlights the dangers surrounding all bodies of water,” said RCMP Cpl. Tania Finn. “Ensure personal flotation devices and extra care are used, especially around moving water, as there is an increased risk associated with downed branches and other obstacles.” BC Ambulance Service transported the child to hospital in critical condition. It is unknown how long the child was under water; however, it is suspected it was approximately five to 10 minutes. The family is being supported by RCMP Victim Services during this very difficult time. No criminality is suspected and no further details will be released.
