Police are working in collaboration with Iqaluit Municipal Enforcement bylaw officers to look into the case. Details about the incident have not been released from city or police sources. The City of Iqaluit has provided free dog and cat licences since at least 2023, a paid system under the domestic animal control bylaw. Free licenses were given out to lessen the burden on the animal shelter and return animals to their owners more quickly. Loose dogs are impounded by bylaw enforcement officers. It costs $75 to release an unlicensed dog and $40 to release a licensed ones. If the dog has not been claimed in three days, the animal may be adopted in Nunavut, sent out of territory, or euthanized, according to the city’s website. This spring, the Hamlet of Kugluktuk introduced a $100 reward for residents who turned in loose dogs. Nunavut News asked the City of Iqaluit if the municipality is considering a similar move and is awaiting a response.
