Published 3:15 pm Monday, August 10, 2026 By William Koblensky Varela Local Journalism Initiative Northern News Service A 36-year-old woman in Kinngait is dead and RCMP have arrested and charged a 42-year-old Kinngait man with first-degree murder, following a shelter-in-place order. On Aug. 7 at 4:30 p.m., police responded to reports of a shooting. The suspect barricaded himself at a home in the 5400 block of the community. A shelter-in-place order was issued in the community while police responded to the incident. The Nunavut RCMP Containment Team and an Emergency Response Team from Ottawa arrived in Kinngait to help with the operation. By the next day, the Nunavut RCMP Major Crime Unit arrested and charged Ezeevadluk Suvega with first-degree murder. The Mounties are not releasing the victim’s name to respect the family’s privacy. Suvega appeared in court on Aug. 9 and remains under arrest. His next court appearance is scheduled for Sept. 15 in Iqaluit.
