LETTER: Here’s to Transit Cape Breton’s new payment system

A tap-to-pay machine on a Transit Cape Breton bus on Tuesday, July 14, 2026. Cape Breton Transit rolled out the technology in June. Nicole Sullivan – Cape Breton PostArticle contentLately, there has been a lot of anger and disappointment directed at the CBRM municipal government over a few issues, such as garbage pickup and the sale of important land at Sydport.THIS CONTENT IS RESERVED FOR SUBSCRIBERS ONLY.Subscribe now to access this story and more:Unlimited access to the website and appExclusive access to premium content, newsletters and podcastsFull access to the e-Edition app, an electronic replica of the print edition that you can share, download and comment onEnjoy insights and behind-the-scenes analysis from our award-winning journalistsSupport local journalists and the next generation of journalistsSUBSCRIBE TO UNLOCK MORE ARTICLES.Subscribe or sign in to your account to continue your reading experience.Unlimited access to the website and appExclusive access to premium content, newsletters and podcastsFull access to the e-Edition app, an electronic replica of the print edition that you can share, download and comment onEnjoy insights and behind-the-scenes analysis from our award-winning journalistsSupport local journalists and the next generation of journalistsRegister to unlock more articles.Create an account or sign in to continue your reading experience.Access additional stories every monthShare your thoughts and join the conversation in our commenting communityGet email updates from your favourite authorsSign In or Create an AccountorArticle contentArticle contentIt is equally important to point out when the municipality does a great job. I want to discuss the Transit Cape Breton situation in the CBRM, and the changes made to the system.Article contentArticle contentWe recently watched how the HRM is struggling to implement the “Tap and Go” payment process in their transit system, and it will likely be Christmas before it is implemented due to technical problems.Article contentTransit Cape Breton recently implemented the same system, and it works flawlessly. Imagine that… we have something before Halifax does, and our municipality got it right before the rest. Perhaps our transit officials could offer to assist the HRM in implementing “Tap and Go” in their system.Article contentNot only is the new pay system working great, but the new fares implemented are a big benefit to the community. I was first upset that the senior rate of $1.00 (per zone) went to $2.50 to travel anywhere in the municipality until I used it, and as it turns out, it is quite a deal.Article contentI live in Howie Center, and I have a vehicle, but I try to use the bus as much as possible to support the system and to get more exercise. I walk to the bus stop and tap my debit card on the screen, and off I go, free to travel anywhere in the CBRM for only $2.50.Article contentArticle contentI usually travel to Walmart in Sydney River and then jump on the number 5 to get downtown, or I can take the number 12, but it takes longer. As long as I am continuously travelling in the CBRM, I keep tapping my debit card (or credit card), and the new system recognizes that I have already paid until I get to my destination, and it allows me to travel for up to 90 minutes.Article contentArticle contentSo now, instead of watching TV in the evenings, I jump on Transit Cape Breton buses and explore our municipality. I sometimes go to North Sydney and enjoy dinner in one of the popular restaurants on Commercial Street or head over to Glace Bay and walk around downtown. I plan to go to Dominion next and walk the beach in the evening.Article contentMore people should be using Transit Cape Breton to explore this unique municipality, and hats off to the CBRM for successfully modernizing our transit system. The buses are clean with friendly and helpful drivers, and it is a great way to move around the CBRM using a flawless and modern payment system. Check out their website and plan a trip for yourself, then sit back and enjoy.Article contentRuss GreenArticle contentHowie CenterArticle content
