Published 8:35 pm Friday, August 21, 2026 By Lauren Collins/Black Press A Montréal youth was arrested Friday (Aug. 21) on terrorism allegations. RCMP’s Federal Policing Eastern Region arrested the “young man” from Montréal as part of an investigation by the Integrated National Security Enforcement Team. Police did not specify the suspect’s age, but also referred to him as a minor. Police say the investigators had “reasonable grounds” to fear he might commit crimes related to violent extremism. The investigation began a few weeks ago after the Federal Bureau of Investigations shared intelligence with Mounties. The suspect allegedly was planning an attack at a school in Montréal and is alleged to have used artificial intelligence in the potential planning of an attack. Police say the suspect also allegedly posted threatening messages on Telegram “targeting various groups.” Police sought a peace bond through the Criminal Code. RCMP say the peace bond allows for “monitoring and de-escalation interventions designed to reduce risks to public safety and promote compliance with the conditions imposed.” The investigation is ongoing. Police say charges may be laid at a later date. The suspect was expected to appear Friday before the Youth Division of the Montréal courthouse. In B.C., a youth was also placed under a 12-month peace bond back in June in connection with an investigation into a threat toward a Salmon Arm school last winter. The FBI was also involved in that investigation. Both come after OpenAI, the parent company of ChatGPT, banned the account of the suspect in the Tumbler Ridge shooting in June 2025 after it detected a violation. OpenAI didn’t inform law enforcement about the information and the banned account until after the Feb. 10 shooting. The company has since vowed to make reforms.
