Trio of foragers found safe after spending night in bush in northern Saskatchewan

RCMP in northern Saskatchewan say three foragers missing near Jayjay Lake have been found safe after they spent the night in the bush. “Early on July 24, an RCMP plane spotted the males in a remote muskeg area in the Jayjay Lake area. A Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency (SPSA) helicopter was then used to pick up them up,” RCMP said in a release. RCMP said Roderick Bird, Emil Ratt, and Ricky McKenzie, were last seen Wednesday night when they set out on foot on a planned foraging trip. Bird’s fiance, Nicole Ratt says he, his cousin Ricky, and her Uncle Emil had been camping at Bear River when the men decided they wanted to go mushroom picking. “So I went and dropped them off at a spot that’s between two bridges at Bear River around 12 p.m.(Thursday)” Ratt said. “They got turned around somehow and couldn’t find their way out.” The area they were found in is about 96 km southeast of La Ronge and 172 km north-northeast of Prince Albert. They were assessed by EMS and it’s not believed they have any serious injuries. RCMP Civil Air Search and Rescue Association (CASARA), the Search and Rescue Saskatchewan Association of Volunteers (SARSAV)and the SPSA and the Saskatchewan RCMP’s Police Dog Services (PDS) all took part in the search effort.
