FIDDLERS FACTS: World Series fever building

Article contentSo sad to hear about the passing of Kenny Dowling last week. He seldom missed racecards at Red Shores, and many of us will never forget how he and brother Shane looked after harness racing star Mike MacDonald when ill health plagued Mike in his final years.Article contentKen was a big slugger in the local slow-pitch leagues, and he’s one of the few I know where his batting average was higher than his fielding average. Aside from helping Mike, Ken liked to remind folks that he looked after FFA star mare Adieu Hanover for Brad Murray.Article contentWe’ll remember Kenny, too. Friends like that are rare. Our condolences to all those connected to a wonderful and loyal friend.Article contentNFLArticle contentIt’s Week 4 in the NFL.Article contentThe L.A. Rams were supposed to be the class of the league, but they’re 1-2 (won-lost) and meet the Philadelphia Eagles (2-1), coming off a dreadful lopsided loss to the Chicago Bears and QB Case Keenum on Sept. 28. The Rams rebound and win by at least our points.Article contentDallas at Houston: The Cowboys seem to find ways to lose, and they lost a road game in Brazil that they should have won. Cowboys QB Dax Prescott missed a wide-open receiver in the front corner of the end zone for what would have been a game-winning touchdown. Instead, Dallas settled for a field goal and then allowed a reception and a long field goal, all within the last eight seconds to lose. Houston is 0-3 after a 19-17 loss to Indianapolis, but this is too good of a club to struggle like this. They looked great in the first week – a 34-31 loss against Buffalo – and will win at home versus Dallas on Oct. 4.Article contentArticle contentThe Bears looked like Super Bowl contenders in that rout of Philadelphia, where Keenum looked like a young Patrick Mahomes. The Bears trounce the New York Jets.Article contentJacksonville played great in easily defeating New England last week. They have a great quarterback, Trevor Lawrence; a solid run and pass attack, and maybe the best D in the league. The Jags meet the Bengals, who thought they had tightened their D but Aaron Rodgers and the Pittsburgh Steelers proved that theory full of holes. The Jags too tough at home; same old Bungles.Article contentHarness racingArticle contentIt’s a star-studded weekend at Red Shores Charlottetown, with the best pacers and trotters battling for big bucks and silverware on Oct. 3 and Championship Sunday (Oct. 4).Article contentThe Oct. 3 12-dash card features four Breeders Crown consolations for $15,000 and a $5,750 top class where Alby Curran’s High Voltage Deo, who has been sharp lately, looks like the favourite.Article contentThe Breeders Crown Banquet is set for Oct. 3 while the Oct. 4 afternoon card has eight championship finals featuring unbeaten three-year-old Windemere Skyy and unbeaten freshman colt Woodmere Rock It. Each race features a hefty $50,000 purseArticle contentArticle contentAlso, Oct. 3, at Mohawk, eight grassroots finals for $100,000; a $150,000 gold filly final, and the same for freshman colts, highlight the card.Article contentThe Atlantic Select Sale is set for Crapaud, P.E.I., on Oct. 9.
